The San Francisco 49ers have bolstered their linebacker depth by re-signing Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles to a one-year contract. This move brings back the linebacker for a fifth season with the team. Flannigan-Fowles' return provides much-needed depth at the position, especially with starting linebacker Dre Greenlaw recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and free agent Oren Burks yet to be signed.
The re-signing of Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles by the San Francisco 49ers comes after the team nearly secured linebacker Eric Kendricks. However, Kendricks ultimately opted for the Dallas Cowboys, leaving a void at linebacker for the Niners.
Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles has primarily served on the 49ers' special teams unit throughout his four-year tenure. He has also seen occasional snaps on defense, including making four tackles in the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs after replacing the injured Greenlaw.
The 49ers have been busy addressing their defensive needs in free agency. Alongside re-signing Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, they've signed defensive linemen Jordan Elliott and Yetur Gross-Matos, while also bringing back defensive lineman Kevin Givens on a one-year deal. With this move, the San Francisco 49ers solidify their linebacker depth and continue to build a strong defensive unit for the upcoming season.
