The Formula One season is well and truly underway, and speculation surrounding driver movement for the 2025 season is reaching a fever pitch. The latest name in the mix? Fernando Alonso, a two-time world champion, with a potential move to Red Bull.
According to former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, a deal between Fernando Alonso and Red Bull could already be at an "advanced stage." German media reports suggest talks have taken place, hinting at a potential partnership between the experienced Spaniard and the championship-contending team.
This news comes amidst uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen's future at Red Bull. While Verstappen is contracted until 2028, rumors of a potential switch to Mercedes have swirled. It's here that Alonso enters the picture.
Christian Horner, Red Bull's team principal, has reportedly been a long-time admirer of Alonso's talent. Schumacher suggests Horner sees Alonso as a valuable asset, particularly if Verstappen departs for Mercedes. "Horner has always been a big fan of his," Schumacher told Sky Sports F1. "He seems to be serious about signing Alonso for next year, to have another strong driver if Verstappen leaves the team."
The prospect of Alonso at Red Bull is an intriguing one. At 42, he remains a highly competitive driver, as evidenced by his recent performances for Aston Martin. Schumacher believes Alonso's experience and hunger for success would make him a perfect fit for Red Bull, especially if they can provide him with a car capable of challenging for wins.
"It's not just a mind game," Schumacher added. "There are these rumours and the sources are pretty good. If Red Bull gave him a car he could win with, of course Alonso would want it!"
However, there are contrasting reports within Red Bull. Helmut Marko, a key figure in the team's driver development program, is known for promoting young talent. This philosophy could see drivers like Yuki Tsunoda in contention for the vacant seat alongside Verstappen.
Further complicating the situation is a reported power struggle within Red Bull's management. With Horner seemingly holding the upper hand, Marko's influence on driver selection may be diminished. F1 Insider's Ralf Bach suggests Alonso is the "preferred candidate" for Horner, potentially tipping the scales in the Spaniard's favor.
Whether a deal between Alonso and Red Bull is truly at an advanced stage remains to be seen. However, the rumors highlight the ever-changing landscape of Formula One. With driver contracts expiring and the title fight heating up, expect more twists and turns before the 2025 season grid is finalized.
