Canelo Alvarez is no stranger to facing challenges in the ring, and it seems the heat is rising outside of it as well. Following comments from Oscar De La Hoya, promoter of Canelo's upcoming opponent Jaime Munguia, Canelo Alvarez has fired back, setting the stage for a highly anticipated super middleweight showdown on May 4th.

Canelo Alvarez Gears Up for Super Middleweight Showdown with Munguia

De La Hoya's remarks, criticizing the entertainment value of Canelo's press conferences and boxing matches, didn't sit well with the champion. What stung most was the timing – De La Hoya chose to voice his opinions from a distance, rather than face-to-face.

This added tension fuels the fire for Canelo's upcoming fight with Munguia, especially considering Canelo hasn't faced a Mexican opponent since 2017. The last time he did was against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The simmering feud between Canelo and De La Hoya goes back to 2020 when Canelo sued Golden Boy Promotions, De La Hoya's company, for breach of contract and interference. This lawsuit severed ties between Canelo and the promotional giant.

Now, in a twist of fate, Canelo is set to face a Golden Boy fighter – Munguia – for the first time since the split. But why Munguia and not the formidable David Benavidez?

A Champion's Choice in the Super Middleweight Division

Canelo addressed these questions, asserting his right to choose his opponents based on his impressive career: "I've earned the right to make my own choices," he declared. He pointed to his extensive track record, highlighting fights against numerous Hall of Famers, undefeated fighters, and champions throughout his 13-year career at the top level.

Canelo continued, listing past opponents like Golovkin, Callum Smith, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather, and Austin Trout, emphasizing his history of facing all challengers. "My record speaks for itself," he concluded.

This upcoming fight with Munguia promises to be an exciting display of Mexican boxing prowess. With the added layer of history between Canelo Alvarez and De La Hoya, all eyes will be on Las Vegas on May 4th to see who emerges victorious in the super middleweight ring.
