The day of UFC 298 is rapidly approaching. The main event of the evening will be a featherweight title battle between Alexander Volkanovski and Ilia Topuria, a division that the Australian rules with an iron grip. The highly anticipated fight will take place on February 17 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California (United States of America).
Volkanovski confessed to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that he sustained a concussion as a consequence of the KO over Islam Makhachev, but he ensures that he will face the 'Matador' in top condition. 'The Great' has discussed a prospective fight against the Topuria brothers on social media with his training partner Justin Van Heerden (12-5-0 in MMA).
At UFC 298, South African Van Heerden (nicknamed 'Lockjaw') faced up against Aleksandre 'The Hunter' Topuria (5-1-0). "Let's make it happen," 'Volk' said of the potential of the four of them being featured on the same bill. You can imagine us annihilating the Topuria brothers...easy money."
Volkanovski discussed his next opponent on The MMA Hour, noting that he has yet to show himself enough to be talked about so much, stating: "I'm not saying he's not good. He may be as excellent as he claims, or as good as everyone claims, but he hasn't shown it yet. [...] I just haven't seen his elite stuff yet."
Furthermore, the Australian champion explained why the UFC wanted Ilia in a championship bout, saying, "UFC takes steps forward and that's how it works, so I'm sure they have their plans already." Topuria mentioned an event in Spain, which I believe is a possibility. I'm sure they want to go there (UFC), since it's a large market with a big fan base. So, make a championship bout (UFC 298) and build some excitement around it. I'm going to derail all of his plans because he won't receive the belt. But at the very least, he gets a bump, a little attention during."
