The highly anticipated UFC 300 finally has its main event, and it's a clash of titans in the light heavyweight division. Champion Alex Pereira will put his newly acquired belt on the line against former titleholder Jamahal Hill in what promises to be an explosive encounter.
This announcement comes with less than two months remaining until the April 13 event, creating significant buzz and excitement surrounding the landmark pay-per-view. Prior to this revelation, Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway for the symbolic "BMF" championship held the top billing.
"We explored numerous options and negotiations," expressed UFC president Dana White. "It's all about seizing opportunities in this industry. Headlining UFC 300 with its immense hype and energy demands the best possible fights. We were determined to build two badass matchups, and these two warriors fit the bill perfectly."
Pereira seeks to defend his light heavyweight crown for the first time after capturing the vacant title from Jiří Procházka at UFC 295 in November. Meanwhile, Hill aims to reclaim the championship he lost due to a summer basketball injury that tore his Achilles tendon. He earned his initial title shot by defeating Glover Teixeira at UFC 283 in January 2023.
The light heavyweight division has seen its fair share of turmoil since Jon Jones relinquished his reign in 2020. Five different fighters have held the belt since then, but only one managed a successful defense. Both Procházka and Hill (the previous two champions) were forced to vacate before even facing a single challenger.
While neither Pereira nor Hill boast the mainstream recognition often associated with a UFC 300 headliner, their fighting styles guarantee a thrilling spectacle. Both bring fearsome power and knockout potential, setting the stage for an unforgettable main event that lives up to the UFC 300 hype.
