Daniele De Rossi's AS Roma reignited their Champions League hopes with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over bottom-placed Salernitana on Monday evening. The win propels the Giallorossi up to fifth in the Serie A table, just a point adrift of the coveted fourth spot currently held by Atalanta.

De Rossi, who took over the reins from the sacked Jose Mourinho earlier this month, witnessed his side take control of the game in the second half. Paulo Dybala, amidst transfer speculations, put Roma ahead of Salernitana with a coolly dispatched penalty five minutes after the restart. The lead was doubled fifteen minutes later when Lorenzo Pellegrini tucked in a cross at the back post.

Salernitana offered a late glimmer of hope through Grigoris Kastanos' 70th-minute header, but ultimately Roma held firm to secure a crucial three points. The victory not only bolsters De Rossi's case for the permanent manager's position but also injects much-needed momentum into the Giallorossi's Champions League pursuit.

For Salernitana, the defeat extends their winless run to five league games and deepens their relegation woes, while for Roma this was a merely glimpse of hope for the team and the coaching stuff . Stuck at the foot of the table with just 12 points, they remain six points adrift of safety and face an uphill battle to escape the drop zone.

Salernitana's quest for survival continues next Sunday with a trip to Torino. AS Roma, fueled by their positive result, return to the Stadio Olimpico next Monday to face Cagliari, aiming to build on their climb towards the Champions League places.
