Boxing legend Mike Tyson announced he will be attending a boxing match scheduled next March 1 in the Libyan city of Benghazi. "I am pleased to announce that I will be in Benghazi," the 57 year old stated in a video on his instagram account.
Muammar Gaddafi, the dictator of Libya, banned boxing in the country in 1979. It was not until his overthrow in 2011 and the reestablishment of the national federation, which had been established in 1962, that boxing was once again reinstated.
Taking up the challenge, the Libyan Boxing Federation made the announcement that Mike Tyson would be attending the fight in Benghazi on its social networks. They also extended an invitation to all of the fans in Libya to take part in the "most outstanding sporting event" that was arranged in a country that has been struggling with conflict and instability for more than a decade.
Benghazi, the second largest city in Libya, is situated in the eastern region of the country. It is under the political control of Marshal Khalifa Haftar and is administratively distinct from the Government of National Unity (GNU), which is headquartered in Tripoli, the capital.
