Manchester United are currently planning on making a formal and official approach to Newcastle's sporting director Dan Ashworth. The Newcastle chief is the top priority of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's. Newcastle would be hesitant to allow Ashworth to depart, however, the 52-year-old is privately receptive to exploring the prospective prospect of joining Man Utd.
Newcastle is getting ready for an official approach, but it would be hard to agree to pay Ashworth to stay with the team since he only joined two years ago.
Manchester United would like to have Dan Ashworth on board this summer to oversee their transfer overhaul while INEOS takes over the football business. Ratcliffe's plan to buy a small share of the club was allowed by both the Premier League and the Football Association, which is why people are interested in Ashworth.
Ratcliffe decided in December to buy a stake worth about £1.2bn. In the past few days, he has been meeting with club staff and other people connected with the club. As a result of Omar Berrada's hiring as the club's new CEO from rivals Manchester City, Ashworth could be moved.
Ashworth has a great track record. He helped West Brom get into the Premier League and came up with the "England DNA" plan. He also helped Brighton and Newcastle get into European football.
Ashworth has made mistakes like any executive; the way he handled the Mark Sampson and Eni Aluko scandal is one of them. But INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Manchester united know that Dan Ashworth would be a great choice as Manchester United's first sports director.
