Belgium dealt a blow on Tuesday as star striker Romelu Lukaku was ruled out of their upcoming friendly against Ireland due to a groin injury. This comes on the heels of Lukaku missing a Europa League match last Thursday due to a recurring hip problem.
While there were positive signs with Lukaku managing 85 minutes in Roma's 1-0 win over Sassuolo this past Sunday, the Belgian FA confirmed that a "slightly overloaded groin" will rule him out of featuring Belgium Ireland this weekend.
The friendly against Ireland serves as a crucial warm-up for Belgium ahead of the European Championship, which kicks off in Germany on June 14th. The Red Devils will also face England next Tuesday as they continue their preparations for Euro 2024.
There is a glimmer of hope for Lukaku, however. Although he has left the team's training camp, he will travel with the squad to Ireland and England. The Belgian FA has remained tight-lipped on his availability for the England match, leaving a question mark over his participation in the second friendly.
With Euro 2024 just around the corner, Lukaku's fitness will be a major concern for manager Roberto Martinez. The powerful striker remains a key figure for Belgium, and his presence will be crucial for their hopes of glory in Germany.
