In addition to his numerous soccer accomplishments, Lionel Messi was voted Time Magazine's "Athlete of the Year" after leading Argentina to their first FIFA World Cup since 1986.
His hard work paid off, as he set a record with his eighth career Ballon d'Or title. To top it all off, he earned the coveted Time Magazine award, which has previously crowned players like LeBron James, Aaron Judge, and Simone Biles.
After scoring seven goals, including two in the championship match against France, the 36 year old Argentine ultimately emulated Diego Maradona and cemented his place in history as the greatest player of all time in Qatar in December 2022.
La Pulga also finished soccer with three assists, which was the most during the tournament; he also generated the second-most opportunities and received five "Player of the Match" accolades, including the most of any player in the championship game.
In France, he led Paris Saint-Germain to victory in Ligue 1 with a string of clutch late goals, totaling 16 goals and 16 assists.
Additionally, he scored an additional goal in the Trophee des Champions. He scored four goals and provided four assists in seven games in the UEFA Champions League, the pinnacle of European club competition.
In a media coup that continues to spark attention, he then changed PSG for David Beckham's MLS team Inter Miami in the summer to pursue his career in the United States. Even there, though, his legacy extends beyond the influence of his aura.
In six MLS games, he scored once and had two assists. However, he scored ten goals and added an extra assist in the Leagues Cup, helping Inter Miami win their first-ever championship when they defeated Nashville SC 10-9 in penalties. In the US Open Cup final, he contributed two more assists, but Inter Miami was unable to win the championship.
