The NBA is conducting a thorough investigation into Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter following a series of unusual occurrences linked to a significant spike in betting activity during his recent games. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Brian Windhorst, and David Purdum reported that the league is scrutinizing Porter's involvement in games played on January 26th and March 20th due to irregularities that have raised concerns about potential betting misconduct by the player.
On January 26th, during a matchup against the LA Clippers, Porter had projected point, rebound, and assist totals of 5.5, 4.5, and 1.5 respectively. However, he left the game early due to injury after playing only four minutes. This resulted in all his prop bets settling for the under, as he finished with no points, three rebounds, and one assist. Notably, DraftKings Sportsbook revealed the following day that the under on Porter's three-pointers (projected at 0.5) was the most profitable bet for any NBA player that night, further fueling speculation.
The situation repeated itself on March 20th when Porter faced off against the Sacramento Kings. The Raptors reported that Porter exited the game after just three minutes due to illness. He finished with no points, no shots attempted, and just two rebounds. Interestingly, sportsbooks had set his over unders at around 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds for that game. Once again, DraftKings SportsBooks announced in a press release the following day that Porter's prop bets were the highest revenue-generating category for all NBA games that night.
The NBA has a strict policy prohibiting players from wagering on any league events. Potential penalties for violating this policy include fines, suspensions, and even termination of contracts. The ongoing investigation into Jontay Porter betting will determine if he has engaged in any wrongdoing and if any disciplinary action is warranted.
