The Cleveland Browns are prioritizing stability at the quarterback position after a tumultuous 2022 season. Their latest move? Signing former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley to a one-year deal. This acquisition adds another veteran signal-caller to the mix, providing much-needed depth and protection behind their starting quarterback, Deshaun Watson.
Last season, the Cleveland Browns were forced to juggle a quarterback due to Watson's shoulder injury and subsequent surgery, which limited him to just six starts. This resulted in a carousel of quarterbacks taking snaps, including P.J. Walker, rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and veteran Joe Flacco, who signed mid-season and ultimately led the team to a playoff berth.
The Cleveland Browns commitment to solidifying their quarterback depth was further evident with the recent signing of 2015's number one overall pick, Jameis Winston. Winston will serve as a backup to Watson, who has only played in 12 games since signing his massive $230 million contract with Cleveland in 2022.
With the addition of Huntley, the Browns now have three quarterbacks vying for the backup role behind Watson. Huntley, a 26-year-old quarterback, has spent the past three seasons as Lamar Jackson's primary backup in Baltimore. While his starting experience is limited (3-7 record in 10 starts), he possesses valuable game experience. Notably, Huntley started a playoff game in the 2022 season during Jackson's absence. Unfortunately, a crucial fumble near the goal line resulted in a game-winning touchdown for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Overall, Huntley's arrival adds another layer of depth and competition to the Cleveland Browns quarterback room. He brings experience as a backup and starter, having thrown for 1,957 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions throughout his 20 regular-season game appearances. The Browns are clearly focused on ensuring stability at the quarterback position, and Huntley's addition is a significant step in that direction.
