Canelo Alvarez Fires Back at Mike Tyson's Criticism

The boxing world buzzed with anticipation when Saul "Canelo" Alvarez announced his next opponent, Jaime Munguia. While many fans craved a Canelo Alvarez vs David Benavidez showdown, the Mexican superstar opted for a different path. This decision drew criticism, most notably from former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, who labeled it a "shame" for boxing. Canelo, however, landed a counterpunch directly targeting Tyson's past struggles.

Canelo Responds to Criticism

Ahead of his highly anticipated clash with Munguia, Canelo addressed Tyson's remarks during a media session. He emphasized Tyson's past battles with addiction, particularly alcoholism, in a pointed response. "His opinion would hold more weight if he were sober," Canelo stated.

Canelo made it clear that he isn't driven by external validation.

"I don't need to prove myself to anyone," he declared. "Remember the Golovkin situation? I don't chase validation." He expressed his belief in the significance of his upcoming fight.

"This is a bigger deal than some might realize. When you bring up Golovkin, Callum Smith, Billie Joe Saunders, or Caleb Plant, it's never enough."

Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia: A Clash of Champions

The focus now firmly lies on Canelo's undisputed super middleweight title defense against Munguia. Stepping into the ring on May 4th in Las Vegas, Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will face the undefeated Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs). Canelo has held all four major belts in the division since 2021, while Munguia is a relative newcomer to the 168-pound weight class, having moved up last year.

Despite their upcoming clash, a sense of mutual respect seems to exist between the fighters. Munguia, who has long admired Canelo Alvarez throughout his professional career, displayed a friendly demeanor during their promotional event. The two shook hands and interacted politely, setting the stage for an intriguing fight night.
