May 23, 2024Author: Klind Parangoni

Atalanta wins the Europa League defying  the odds and crushed Bayer Leverkusen's dream of an invincible season, claiming a resounding 3-0 victory  on Wednesday. The hero of the night was Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian winger who ripped through the Leverkusen defense with a clinical hat-trick.

Lookman Steals the Show

Leverkusen, the newly crowned German champions, entered the final with an astonishing unbeaten record across all competitions, spanning a remarkable 51 games. However, Lookman shattered their fairytale with a ruthless display of finishing.

The 26-year-old capitalized on defensive errors to put Atalanta in a commanding position with two goals within the first 26 minutes. His first came from a Davide Zappacosta cross that evaded everyone, leaving Lookman unmarked to unleash a rising shot. The second goal followed a misplaced header by Amine Adli, allowing Lookman to weave past Granit Xhaka and curl a delightful shot past Matěj Kovář.

Atalanta Upsets the Favorites

This victory marks a historic moment for Atalanta, a club known for its attacking style and passionate fanbase. Under the guidance of veteran coach Gian Piero Gasperini, they defied the financial dominance of Europe's elite clubs, becoming the first Italian team to lift the Europa League trophy since 1999. It's a story that resonates with neutral fans, proving that success can be achieved on merit and attractive football, even with a modest budget.

Leverkusen's Unprecedented Run Ends

For Leverkusen, the defeat comes as a crushing blow after their exceptional season. Coach Xabi Alonso must now pick up his players for the upcoming German Cup final against Kaiserslautern. Despite the disappointment, there's no denying the incredible feat they achieved by remaining unbeaten for so long.

Key Moments and Talking Points

  • Lookman's clinical finishing capitalized on Leverkusen's defensive lapses.
  • Atalanta's passionate fans, outnumbered in Dublin, outsang their Leverkusen counterparts.
  • Gasperini's tactical approach stifled Leverkusen's usual elegant style of play.
  • The victory brings joy to Bergamo, a city hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Atalanta's triumph in the Europa League final serves as an inspiration for smaller clubs, proving that determination and tactical prowess can overcome financial muscle. Lookman's hat-trick will be etched in Atalanta folklore, while Leverkusen will have to regroup and aim for more silverware next season.'
